Background
Niacin in larger doses is now proven as a very effective and safe antihyperlipidemic agent. It decreases serum triglyceride levels by lowering low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and very lowdensity lipoprotein (VLDL) while raising levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL). Niacin treatment, alone or in combination with bile acid sequesters, has been shown to cause regression of atherosclerotic plaques and reduce overall patient mortality (Brown et al., 1990). Niacin in large doses has also been shown to delay or prevent onset of NIDDM (Eliot et al., 1993).
